The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences (NIMHANS), located in Bangalore, and is a neuroscience institute. It is recognised by the Government of India as a 'medical institute of national importance' (among others being: AIIMS-Delhi, JIPMER-Pondicherry, PGI- Chandigarh, and Sree Chitra Medical Centre, Trivandrum). On 14 November 1994, NIMHANS was declared a Deemed University under Section 3 of the UGC Act, 1956 (3 of 1956).
